FAQs about Hovercraft Facts

Here are some hovercraft facts to get you started. More hovercraft facts will be added soon as frequently asked questions (FAQs) come up:

What is a hovercraft ?

A hovercraft is an amphibious vehicle that travels on a cushion of pressurized air. Since hovercrafts only require a flat surface to sustain lift, they are incredibly versatile, enabling the vehicle to travel over land, water, ice and mud.

How do hovercrafts work?

The pressurized air cushion is typically generated by a fan at the bottom of the craft, much like a propeller on a helicopter. The air pressure is sustained by an airbag called a "skirt", which traps the air flow into a bubble and lifts the craft above the surface several inches. Another propeller (or two) installed in specialized ducts at the back of the hull enable the craft to move forward and back.

What's so cool about hovercrafts?

Do you really have to ask? To begin with, a hovercraft is a quirky vehicle that defies classification. The hybrid aircraft and water vessel has captured the imagination of filmmakers, hobbyists, and bona fide engineers, spawning a variety of both practical applications and futuristic musings. You don't need a license to pilot one, so hovercrafterz of all ages can participate in the fun (Always remember safety precautions and adult supervision for minors!).

How do I get me one of those nifty hovercrafts ?

Well, you'll find such a range of vehicles that you first need to decide what kind of craft you'd like. Are you into building a homemade contraption? Buying a model toy as a gift (not to mention for your own guilty pleasure)? Or are you down for experiencing the full blown hovering thrill and actually piloting one of these babies?
