Hovercraft Manufacturers - buying a ready 2 ride craft
Some ready-to-ride hovercraft manufacturers showcase the coolest pieces of engineering I've ever seen. Not quite a car and definitely not a boat, you need to blink to remind yourself it's not a computer generated special effect :)
Hov Pod is a great example of a craft designed for the leisure cruising market. Combining safety and fun, it's emerging as THE must-have cruising hovercraft.
This is actually the first hovercraft I've ever had the pleasure to try out - read about my first hovercraft ride on a Hov Pod here.
Sold retail, recreational vehicles such as Hoverjet from Hovertechnics start with a price tag of $10K for a brand new craft. Some dealers sell used or pre-owned hovercrafts, though the best deals are found online.
Expert hovercrafterz base their own personal designs on existing models from manufacturers. A big chunk of the retail price tag has to do with expert human labor and assembly, so buying in kit form reduces the price significantly. Remember that most hovercraft manufacturers are small shops. So even if they don't officially offer kits or plans, they're likely to be flexible if you're serious about buying and putting the craft together yourself. If you live close by, it wouldn't hurt to call and set up a visit. It's great fun, and a personal connection goes a long way !
So for extra control over configuration and price, consider the following manufacturers:
K&M Products in the UK
Provides plans and entire craft completely built or in kit form – plans are about $70 and a full kit starts at $8k.
Hovery hailing from Brazil
Builds an innovative recreational craft that'll fold right down to fit in the trunk of a car. It's great fun, although probably not the way to go for rough waters or heavy duty racing.
